What Is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates is a dynamic, full-body workout performed on a machine called the Reformer. The equipment features a sliding carriage, springs, and pulleys that create adjustable resistance — allowing for both gentle rehabilitation and challenging strength training.
Unlike traditional mat Pilates, the Reformer allows a greater range of motion, providing deeper muscle activation, improved alignment, and more versatility in movement. Each exercise is designed to build strength, flexibility, and control while engaging your core and stabilising muscles.
Where Did Reformer Pilates Come From?
Reformer Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer, during the early 20th century.
While working as a nurse during World War I, Joseph began experimenting with spring-based resistance exercises to help bedridden soldiers regain mobility and strength. He attached springs to hospital beds — and this simple innovation eventually evolved into the Reformer machine we know today.
In the 1920s, Joseph moved to New York City and opened his first studio, attracting dancers, athletes, and performers who wanted to improve balance, coordination, and endurance. Over time, his unique method spread worldwide, becoming a cornerstone of modern fitness and rehabilitation.
